How to Delete an Email

Deleting unnecessary emails will help you maintain a clutter-free inbox and ensure that important messages don’t get lost. In this article, we’ll teach you how to delete an email on three popular email platforms: Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail. Let’s begin!

How to Delete an Email in Gmail

  1. Go to Gmail.com and sign in.
  2. Go to your inbox and find the email you want to delete.
  3. Hover your mouse over the email to reveal a small square checkbox on the left side.
  4. Click the checkbox to select the email (you can select multiple emails if you want to delete them in bulk).
  5. Click the trash bin icon located in the top menu.
  6. Click “OK” to complete the process.

How to Delete an Email in Outlook

  1. Go to Outlook.com and sign in.
  2. Go to your inbox and find the email you want to delete.
  3. Select the email by clicking the checkbox to the left of the sender’s name. You can select multiple emails if needed.
  4. Click the “Delete” button located in the top menu.

How to Delete an Email in Apple Mail

  1. Open the Apple Mail application and sign in.
  2. Go to the inbox and find the email you want to delete.
  3. Click on the checkbox next to the email to select it.
  4. Click the trash bin icon in the top menu.
  5. Click “Delete” or “OK” to complete the process.

Can I recover deleted emails?

Yes, depending on your inbox configuration, you can recover deleted emails. All three email clients will send the deleted email to a trash folder or deleted items folder, where they will remain until you either delete them or they are automatically purged after some time.

Can you permanently delete an email?

Even though you can’t see the email in your inbox or folders, the email might still exist on the email provider’s servers, at least for a certain period. Email providers often have backup systems and data retention policies in place, so they may keep deleted emails for a limited time, usually for administrative and recovery purposes. However, you cannot access or recover these permanently deleted emails directly.
